Introduction to reverse osmosis: introduction to the characteristics of reverse osmosis membrane and ultrafiltration membrane

Reverse osmosis is a water treatment technology using membrane separation, which is the reverse process of osmotic phenomenon in nature (the reverse osmosis process in which water molecules pass through the membrane by overcoming the osmotic pressure with external driving force for brine).

The reverse osmosis water treatment process is basically a physical desalination method, which has many advantages that the traditional water treatment method does not have:

  • Reverse osmosis is to desalinate and purify salt-containing feedwater by using a physical method without phase change at room temperature. At present, the desalination rate of ultra-thin composite membrane elements can reach more than 99.5%, and can simultaneously remove colloids, organic matter, bacteria, viruses, etc. in water.
  • Water treatment is only driven by water pressure, and its energy consumption is the lowest among many treatment methods.
  • There is no need for a large number of chemical agents and acid and alkali regeneration treatment, no chemical waste liquid and waste acid, alkali liquid discharge, no environmental pollution.
  • The reverse osmosis device can continuously operate water production, the system is simple, the operation is convenient, and the quality of the product water is stable.
  • The workload of operation and maintenance and equipment maintenance is very small.
  • The equipment occupies less area and requires less space.
  • It is suitable for a wide range of raw water quality, not only for the treatment of brackish water, sea water and even sewage, but also for the treatment of fresh water with low salinity.

Characteristics of ultrafiltration membranes

Ultrafiltration membrane is different from ordinary hollow fiber, flat and roll membrane. In order to adapt to the direct treatment of turbid water, it has a tubular membrane structure of ultrafiltration membrane with technical technology. It has the following characteristics:

  •  Membrane material is polyethersulfone material with long service life.
  • Resistant to strong oxidants such as chlorine, potassium permanganate, ozone, etc., so it can be combined with chemical oxidation to remove iron and manganese. It is resistant to strong acid and alkali, and can be chemically cleaned with ordinary acid and alkali.
  • The tubular film has high mechanical strength and good tensile strength.
  • Strong adaptability to raw water quality, excellent and stable treated water quality, not affected by changes in raw water quality.
  • Strong anti-biological pollution ability, not biodegradable, easy to clean and restore.
