How Electrodialysis Works

Electrodialysis is an emerging high-efficiency membrane separation technology characterized by the selective permeation of ions in solution through ion-exchange membranes. It uses the action of the DC electric field to make the anions and cations in the water directionally migrate, and uses the anion and cation exchange membranes to selectively permeate the anions and cations in the aqueous solution (that is, the cationic membrane has the ability to selectively permeate anions and block cations from passing through), so that the raw water When passing through the electrodialyser, a part of the water is desalinated and the other part is concentrated, thus achieving the purpose of separating the solute and the solvent.

  1. The salt removal rate is arbitrary: it can be selected within the range of 30~99% according to needs.
  2. Low energy consumption: Electrodialysis uses electricity to remove dissociated ions from water, so the electricity consumption for desalination is related to the salt content and desalination rate of raw water. For example, water with a salt content of 1000mg/l and a desalination rate of 80% is treated with a medium-sized electrodialyser, and the power consumption of DC desalination is about 0.25KW·h/m3. The water inlet pressure is 0.2Mpa, so the power consumption is also low, and it is one of the more economical water treatment technologies in this field.
  3. No pollution to the environment: When electrodialysis is running, it does not have the problem of saturation failure like ion exchange resin, so it does not need to regenerate frequently with acid and alkali, and does not need to add other chemicals. Basically pollution-free. Compared with reverse osmosis, there is no strong noise of high pressure pump.
  4. The device has flexible design, long service life and convenient operation and maintenance.

The specific uses of electrodialysis

  1. Desalination of seawater and brackish water to produce drinking water.
  2. Preparation of beverage water such as beer, soda, purified water, etc.

  4. Combined use of electrodialysis and ion exchange to produce distilled water, high-purity water and ultra-pure water. This water-making method can save 80-90% of acid and alkali, avoid frequent regeneration of resin, and greatly reduce the cost of water production.

  6. Recovery of precious metals such as Au, Ag and Cu in industrial wastewater (liquid) such as electroplating and electronics, and reuse of wastewater.
