Process of Slaughterhouse Wastewater Treatment

Wastewater generated from slaughterhouses contains high levels of organic matter, fats, and suspended solids, which require thorough treatment before discharge. Here’s an overview of the step-by-step process used in a typical slaughterhouse wastewater treatment system.

1. Screening and Oil Separation

The initial stage involves passing the wastewater through a screening tank to remove large suspended particles. Once screened, the wastewater flows into an oil separation tank, where oils and fats are separated. The separated oils can be collected for disposal, while the partially treated water moves to the next stage.

2. Flow to the Equalization Tank

From the oil separation tank, the wastewater flows into the equalization tank. Here, the water level is regulated, and when it reaches a high level, a pump automatically activates to transfer the water to the subsequent treatment unit. The equalization tank ensures a steady flow rate, preventing overloads in the downstream process.

3. Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF)

After equalization, the water is pumped into a Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) unit to remove fine suspended solids and residual oils. The DAF system releases micro-bubbles that attach to suspended particles, lifting them to the surface where they are skimmed off. Clear water from the DAF system flows through an overflow pipe into the hydrolysis-acidification tank.

4. Hydrolysis-Acidification for Anaerobic Treatment

In the hydrolysis-acidification tank, anaerobic microorganisms break down complex organic compounds into simpler molecules like methane and carbon dioxide. This step effectively converts harmful organic materials into harmless byproducts, which also contribute to reducing the overall organic load.

5. Biological Contact Oxidation for Aerobic Treatment

Next, the water enters the biological contact oxidation tank, where an aerobic process further degrades organic matter. Microorganisms grow in the form of biofilms and suspended biomass, utilizing oxygen to break down organic pollutants into carbon dioxide and water. This stage combines the benefits of activated sludge e biofilter systems, ensuring efficient degradation of residual organic compounds.

6. Sedimentation Tank for Solid-Liquid Separation

Following oxidation, the water flows into the sedimentation tank, where solid particles, aged biofilm, and suspended solids settle at the bottom. This tank performs solid-liquid separation, ensuring that only clear, treated water flows forward.

7. Disinfection and Discharge

From the sedimentation tank, the effluent flows into a disinfection tank, where it is disinfected to eliminate pathogens before being discharged. Proper disinfection ensures that the treated water meets environmental discharge standards and can be safely released into natural bodies of water.

8. Sludge Treatment and Recycling

Sludge from the sedimentation tank is directed to a sludge thickening tank, where it undergoes aerobic digestion. The supernatant liquid from the sludge thickening tank is recirculated back to the equalization tank for further treatment, while the concentrated sludge is pumped to a sludge belt filter press for dewatering. The dewatered sludge is then transported off-site, and the resulting filtrate is returned to the equalization tank for retreatment.

Conclusão

The slaughterhouse wastewater treatment process involves multiple stages, each designed to remove specific contaminants and minimize environmental impact. By incorporating steps such as oil separation, anaerobic hydrolysis, biological oxidation, and sludge management, the treatment process effectively converts complex organic waste into safe, dischargeable effluents, ensuring compliance with environmental standards.
